Description
Montana Territory 1867…
Case Jamison was left to run the Lazy J Ranch after a Sioux raiding party killed his parents. He endured three years of loneliness, with only his friend, Luke Haskins and his other ranch hands. Case finally decided to find someone with whom he could share his life.
There was a basic flaw in his plan… There were less than ten single females anywhere near Helena and the Lazy J. When Jack Owens, pastor of the Christian Church told him one of his church members had a mail order bride, he decided it was his only alternative.
Carrie Robbins is the oldest of five daughters, living with her parents in the small college town of Oxford, Ohio, thirty five miles north of Cincinnati. After graduating from the Oxford High School, she entered the Oxford Female College. During her junior year, Joshua Hartley, a neighbor and friend since both were five, asked her to marry him. She accepted his proposal, but both agreed to wait until Joshua returned from the war. Carrie wept after kissing him goodbye at the train station. One more kiss, then he hurried to catch the train that would carry the First Ohio Volunteers to war.
Carrie continued her education while waiting for Joshua to return. He would not return. He was killed on the third day of the battle at Gettysburg.
When her mother started to invite men her father’s age for dinner, as potential husbands, Carrie rebelled, determined to decide her own fate, She placed an ad in the Matrimonial Bulletin.
This is the story of two young people and their struggle to overcome their separate tragedies, and the new risks and challenges they face as a young couple living on the American frontier.

In this book Case is a rancher who loses both of his parents to an Indian attack. He is very lonely and decides to run an ad in a matrimonial newspaper. There are many interesting twists and turns to the plot which lead to a happy ending.
I liked that you could tell the author had done her homework before writing this story. Her characters come alive as you read about their life and you almost feel what they feel! Susan Leigh Carlton has a way with words that keeps your attention.
I've started reading Novellas lately, and am really pleased with most of them. The story of Case and Carrie was easily read and very interesting. I really like the way you told a bit about the rest of their lives. I think I may like the short stories better than the long ones. I'm getting up in age, and I like to be able to finish before I go to sleep. Thank You Susan. I will be looking to read more of them.
The story is about a young girl from a "well-to-do" family which are trying to marry her off to an elder man she does not love. She secretly applies to become a mail order bride.

She has problem giving birth and has to have a caesareen section, which was pretty brave is the 1800's. good story
I very much enjoyed your book. I did feel you gave abit too much explanation on the wedding night. It is labeled Christian, I would not want my Granddaughters to read only that small part.
I live 60 miles from Helena, Montana. I thought you did a great job describing the area. When they pointed out the shooting star I thought they were seeing the Aurora Borealis. We often see it even now.

Very sad story. However this story's writing started out much smoother than a previous story by her. Begins with a tornado and a few years later Case's parents are killed in an Indian raid.

The epilogue continues with death.

I will not re-read this story and doubt I will read any more of her work.
Remember this is my personal opinion and does not reflect on the author
Though I’ve always enjoyed watching Westerns, this book was my first experience of reading a Mail Order Bride romance, and I LOVED it! This book starts immediately in the action with seven-year-old Case and his parents weathering natural disaster. It’s clear the Ms. Carlton did her research. The book is vividly written, and I found myself really experiencing life in Montana through all five senses. As this gentle love story unfolded, Case and Carrie’s developing relationship captivated my interest. The characters are well round and grounded in their historical period and setting, and the letters the couple exchanged before meeting really deepened my understanding of them both. Ultimately, this is a story of overcoming tragedy and finding a second chance through love. Great read! Can't wait to get the next book!
