"The Cracker Factory" is the story of Cassie, a bored young housewife from Cleveland's middle-class suburbs in the 1970s. She has a critical, controlling mom; a husband who is stable but drives her nuts by treating her like a child and making decisions without her input; a couple of kids; oh, and don't forget, a drinking problem. She tries having an affair, which is a total bust, and she winds up in the mental ward at holiday time. You may be asking yourself how this could possibly be funny, unless it's in some hackneyed old pre-"Days of Wine and Roses" era when getting falling-down-drunk was still uproarious. But Cassie is very human, and likable, and funny. So funny, in fact, that you wonder why in heck she's piddling away her time drinking and cleaning house for husband Charlie when she could be out becoming the next Erma Bombeck or Rosanne Barr. I still laugh out loud at the scene where Cassie jogs after her lover on a deserted beach, but instead of it being romantic, she's "spitless with thirst and dying to pee." The description of holiday time in the mental ward filled with other depressed and disturbed folks is full of pathos, quintessentially Cleveland and yes, ruefully funny.

Part of Cassie's likeability is that underneath all of her joky bluster, you can tell she really does care about her husband and her mom and wants to get past her problem and reach a better understanding with them. Furthermore, the book is so well-written that even a reader like me can enjoy it - and I've never had a drinking problem or other addiction, never been in a mental ward, never had a family member who did either, never had kids, never been a stay-at-home housewife, have always had a career, and wouldn't in a million years have gotten married fresh out of high school to some guy and bought a house and started a family as Cassie did. I still liked the book and cared about the characters. That's some good writing, there!
Joyce Rebeta-Burditt's first book, The Cracker Factory, is one of my all-time favorites. This follow-up, 40 years later, is good but not great. It alternates between chapters bringing her (very successful) life up to the present time and chapters which form a screenplay about a women's AA group. This works better than one would think. AA is her passion; it saved her life, and she encourages anyone with a problem with alcohol to join up.
Hysterically funny, well written and extremely accurate & relatable.
I am so glad to get this book. It was out of priint for a long while and I was so glad to see it available again.
Read it many times now and just love it.
I finished this one almost in one sitting. The humor and humanity in this book are fantastic. Sometimes as people we just get lost and you never know how you might find your way back. This is the fictional story of one woman's journey. I laughed out loud so many times with this book, I will definitely read it again!
It definitely looked old but was in very good condition even so, I was glad to find it gentle used somewhere. I never got around to reading it when it was popular and they made a movie from the book. I enjoyed the book and the service was great.
Great read - excellently written.
