I have 4 library cards, so I am extremely picky about what I am willing to pay for. But I bought this book as soon as I finished the 1st in the series, and I would have paid at least 3 times as much for it. I sincerely hope there are more in the series, because I love reading about Ivy Rose and all the other characters. This is a well-crafted, interesting and believable story with a fascinating glimpse into Dublin of the mid-1920s. I highly recommend this book and the one before it.

Ha'Penny Chance Ivy Rose Series Book 2 edition by Gemma Jackson Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

The second book of a series of three further develops the story of Ivy Rose Murphy. This girl, left alone in the slums of Dublin, when her "Da" dies, creates her own " family" and business by helping others, less fortunate than her. She has a head for business that makes the reader project her future success.
The story is one to which many can relate ,if you have ever been poor or an immigrant and have had enough ambition and initiative
to improve your circumstances, helped along by a stranger whom you meet under unusual circumstances. Can't wait to read the third book now.
This is the second book in this series. I just love the setting which takes place in Dublin. The characters are all very well developed and very interesting. I just love Ivy Rose and Jem Ryan and their story. The description of The Lane is such that you can feel and picture the place. I felt as though I was transported back to this time and place. Something in the story really resonated with me. I just can't get enough of this story. I was so sad when the book ended and had to get the last book in the series. I am hoping that Gemma Jackson continues with this story because I want to know what happens next in Ivy Rose's story.
I read the first of these and was hooked by the characters, the authors ability to spin her store and bring them to life. I also loved how few errors there were in this book with spelling, grammar, etc. No time is spent proofreading before "publishing" anymore. Worth your time to read and step back in time with Ivy and her her colorful friends.
I absolutely loved the first two books and am anxious to read
the third one. I learned things that I had never heard of before
about the poor in Ireland. I'm sure they apply to all countries
but things like saving sheets to pawn them in order to buy food.
Wearing the same clothes night and day and having none others
to change in to. Ways of living we attribute to the homeless, not
people who live in houses or apartments. I have been to Ireland
and am familiar with the bridge in Dublin that I think the author
is using. I have been fortunate in having traveled extensively, but
for those who haven't, there is nothing like a good book to take
you wherever you want to go.
Kudos to Gemma Jackson.
This is the scond book of Ivy Rose’s life. I read the first book last week and didn’t want to put it down. As soon I finished, I downloaded the second book. It is about an Irish “gel” who has been dealt a gruesome life. She is an awesomely inspiring character. I can’t think of a soul who would not enjoy her shenanigans! The Irish dialect in which Ivy’s life is described, is an education in itself!
With great courage, moral strength and determination Ivy Rose builds a charming life for herself. Ever a worker and giver, she becomes a force of nature in “The Lane”.
This story, written by Gemma Jackson, should be read by children of all ages....which you realize means everyone!
Ha'Penny Chance by Gemma Jackson, (Ivy Rose series book #2) was a little disappointing. All the characters I fell in love with in the first book, Through the Streets Broad and Narrow, return, but the story felt a little uneventful.

Despite the lack of major events, I found it easy to continue through to the end, eager to learn what happens next. The story was not completely uninteresting, managing to give me a few 'Ah-Ha!!' moments as it introduced new characters, strengthened relationships, and explained a few others - which I'm hoping will be explored further in the next installment.

I will continue on with the series, hoping books three and four pick up the pace a bit, more in line with the first.
I really liked the first book although I would never have bought it if I had realized that it is a SERIAL and not a SERIES. This book took too long to get to anything new. IMO there is too much filler and the whole thing could have been completed with at least one less "book." Ivy Murphy is an engaging character and I really find it interesting how the poorer people lived in the 1920s in Dublin, Ireland. I know nothing of this time period and am assuming that the author has done proper research and this is based on the true-to-life daily lifestyle during this time. One thing that confuses me, though, is all the tea drinking that these people do. They don't have money for food for their children but everyone seems to have plenty of tea to drink. I would have thought that tea was a luxury. The main character, Ivy, drinks tea to extreme. The author not only recounts every time she has tea but goes into excruciating detail about getting the water, boiling the water, preparing the tea, the cups used, and how she drinks the stuff. At times I wanted to stick her nose in her teacup and drown her in it so that I wouldn't have to read about it. I'm going to be totally honest here. I would not read any more of these "books" but I accidentally bought book 3 instead of book 2 so I had to go back and buy book 2 because at that time I was really interested in the story. Although I have lost interest, I will read book 3 later. At this point, I have had enough tea drinking to last me for a while.

NOTE This is a SERIAL, not a SERIES. These are not stand alone books and need to be read in order. Cliffhangers abound.
